Mikhail Bulgakov 1891 -1940 was a dramatist as well as a novelist; born in Kiev in a religious, educated family. He joined the Moscow Arts theater as a dramatist, and had great success, before being “cancelled” for Non Sovjet-sympathetic literature. Almost nothing was printed of his work in his lifetime.

Bulgakov’s revenge is a comic satire he wrote in secret, based on his frustrations and treatment by the old Stanislavski Moscow Arts Theatre; still run by Konstantin Stanislavski himself, till his death in 1938.
