THE PLOT :
Thomas Novachek is the writer-director of a new play, an adaptation of the historic novel Venus in Furs by Sacher-Masoch ( who inspired the term “masochism“). The play begins with the Director on the telephone complaining about the auditions and the actresses of that day . Suddenly, at the last minute, a new actress, Vanda bursts in. At first it’s hard to imagine how she can interest the director: She’s bad mannered and low classed . But she convinces the directore to let her audition and the director will read in the other male character . Much happens during this dynamic reading, as lightning flashes and thunder crashes outside. The actress shows astonishing insights into the story and her character, and performs a terrific audition. The subject of the play is sexual domination and submission. As the audition continues Vanda attacks the script as sexist, pornography. Thomas at first defends it as a faithful adaptation of a literary classic about passion and desire. Vanda accuses Thomas of having his own masochistic fantasies, which he denies. However, as the story develops, he increasingly identifies with the masochistic male lead in the play. By the end he has become Vanda’s slave.
Roman Polanski made a 2013 French-language erotic drama film based on the play by American playwright David Ives
